Our Program

Special 21 Dance Class  (Ages 3-12) – Saturdays 10:00 am – 11:00 am EST

The Special 21 Program provides one free dance class per week on Saturdays from 10 am to 11 am to children with Down Syndrome.  The first few minutes of class consist of a guided stretch.  Stretching is necessary in order for your body to become more pliable which decreases risk of injury. This is followed by a series of actions that go along with a song.  The song playing will include “fly” , “skip” or “tiptoe” and everyone will follow the directions and spreads their arms and fly, skip, or tiptoe around the room.  These actions are done in order to get your heart pumping before beginning any dancing that will require a higher heartbeat and more physical exertion.  Next, a few songs are played and the dance instructor along with the volunteers perform a series of simple movements working on a developmentally-appropriate choreography.  The children see how we are dancing all together to the music and dance along with us.  This last choreography is to be performed at the end of the program at Dancing in XS's annual recital on June 2021.
